Welcome to Beneath the Bark!
We are a small, family-owned and operated business dedicated to providing exceptional products to our community of first responders. Our journey began in 2019, when Lucas Braithwaite (former Owner and Operator and Surrey Police Officer) decided to turn his hobby of challenge coin collecting into a thriving business. In 2023, Lucas had some health concerns and decided to take a step back from Beneath the Bark and give the company to Mike Inch. The Owners may have changed hands, but their relationship continued, and the core values of quality, integrity, and customer satisfaction have remained unchanged.

Mike Inch has always had a passion for woodworking and carpentry. Beneath the Bark was a way for Mike to seamlessly blend creativity and precision. From a young age, Mike was fascinated with anything to do with building and creating. This passion led him to formal training in woodworking and carpentry, where he honed his skills for furniture making, building, cabinetry and custom woodwork. Over the years, Mike has become known for his meticulous craftsmanship, and innovative designs, earning the admiration and trust of his clients.
Mike's commitment to excellence in woodworking is deeply rooted in his family's tradition of service and dedication. He draws immense inspiration from his two uncles who are retired firefighters, embodying the values of bravery and resilience. Another uncle, who served as a Regimental Sargent Major in the Canadian Airborne Engineers, instilled in Mike a profound respect for discipline and leadership. This familial legacy of service extends to his cousins, one of whom is a member of the Vancouver Police Emergency Response Team (ERT), while the other serves as a Burnaby Firefighter. Their stories of courage and selflessness profoundly influence Mikes work ethic and personal values.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mike has a fervent passion for supporting first responders. He is actively involved in various initiatives that honor and assist those who serve on the front lines. Whether it’s through creating handcrafted memorabilia for local fire and police departments or volunteering at community events, Mike is dedicated to giving back to the heroes who risk their lives for others.
In every project he undertakes, Mike channels his admiration for first responders into his work, infusing each piece with the same dedication and care that his family has demonstrated in their service. His woodworking is not just a career but a tribute to the values of courage, service, and excellence that he holds dear.Our Team
Our team is made up of dedicated family members (occasionally even Lucas joins in to help). Mike’s wife, Jaime, is in the background helping with the financial aspect of the business, as well as marketing. Mike’s sister and Uncle help in the shop, putting together pieces for their dedicated customer. Occasionally, Mike’s kids, Rowan and Emerson, can be found “helping” out and cheering dad on in the shop. Each member brings unique skills, creativity and expertise, contributing to the overall success of our business.
